How a woollen sleep mask is helping me quiet the noise of the day and get through COVID.

COVID-19 mucking with your sleep cycles?
Glad to hear if it isn’t.. BUT if you’re like me, life has been a little unstable and sleep has been interrupted more than usual.
I was at a point where I was feeling more than hearing low helicopter spotlighting COVID patrols and it had to change because no amount of coffee was helping.

Now usually, I can sleep anywhere for any extended period of time so it took a while to realise this was an issue. I’d seen some write ups around sleep masks decided to give a freebie airline sleep mask a go. I noticed a difference but found the airline mask material made my face feel stuffy and my skin break out, I went hunting for a wool based one because of the natural breathability benefits and I’m no stranger to the benefits of wool and wool for sleep.

The benefits I found to using a sleep mask:

  1. No rearranging or interior redecorating – lower cost vs. block out curtains
  2. Improve sleep quality – darkness for sleep is evolutionary, humans and our ancestors are naturally diurnal.
Darkened sleep conditions are related to increased REM sleep, a deeper sleep and more of it.
  3. Less “noise” – not audible noise – but stress, anxiety all of which have been heightened as life changed with COVID.
  4. Natural – I only take sleeping pills on long haul flights and was not prepared to risk it with work
  5. No dry eyes – I wear contacts so waking with dry eyes is not a great start to the day

I was so close to giving up. So many websites, search keywords. Silk, cotton, more polyester than I could count. And ‘wool’, disappointingly synthetics pretending.

And then that super eureka moment!
Happening upon a 100% Merino sleep mask, 3 layers of Australian Merino fabric woven in Italy and the mask itself is hand-crafted in Brooklyn, USA.

My mask arrived in July and two months later I am still using it nightly. For me, this has changed my day. The You Are What You Sleep Merino Sleep Mask is so comfortable to wear, even when I’m sleeping on my side or moving around. The surface of the natural material is soft, the wool fabric wicks away moisture and is perfectly breathable. The design is larger than the airline mask I had but blocks better and sits lighter and the three-layer design gives a comfortable structure. It’s not flimsy.

After wearing a face mask all day, you’d think the last thing I’d be keen on is a sleep mask over my eyes at night – but I don’t even notice it is on until waking up in the morning.

It arrives in a bamboo case isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, it had a lovely natural scent which is great for storage. Once that fades I’m looking to add some drops of calming-sleep promoting essential oil – like lavender or bergamot. The case will be absolutely travel perfect when I’m allowed out again!

The 100% Superfine Merino 3 Layer Sleep Mask is currently listed on sale at $39 USD (down from $45USD).

Cost per wear goes down every single night I use it – with two months so far sitting at 65c a night, over six months it will be less than 25c.
With one year, closer to 10c per wear.
